The Level
A little short experimental project. I borrowed an old manual medium format film camera for the day and took it to a skatepark. It is probably the one of the daftests camera to try and shoot skating with but it was fun and the people I met were welcoming and kind. What I love about skating other than the joy of the act itself, rolling through the city, is how it gives you an alternative way to view and interact with your environment. A kerb is no longer just a demarcation between the road and the pavement, it is now a little ledge for you to try and jump your skateboard off. Different textures of the materials used to make the pavements impact how you feel and move through the city. Gradients in roads and wall-sides have new exaggerated uses and meanings. It seems to me that a skatepark might be one the most fully realised versions of this alternative way of thinking, seeing and interacting with an environment.
