Allotment Chairs
I was drawn to photographing the empty chairs I'd noticed dotted around allotments. I liked the contrast of the temporary and static chair placed awkwardly or comfortably in the more permanent but growing natural environment. I liked that the chairs seemed to be waiting peacefully and patiently for their sitters, waiting to give their owners a place to have a rest from the work of digging, planting, weeding and harvesting. All while the allotments themselves are such peaceful places, a respite from the surrounding and busy modern urban environments they inhabit. It is my intention that these images offer hope, as each chair represents a human who has endeavoured to engage productively with their environment. However it is also my intention that they reflect how difficult it is to maintain these efforts, as many of the chairs are overgrown and not in use.
